The Power of Your Surroundings

When Christmas approaches, it signals the emergence of the year's end. Undoubtedly, it is a time filled with excitement and expectations, where relationships with friends and family members come under scrutiny. It is a period marked by mixed emotions, whether you are an extrovert or introvert, whether you prefer celebrating with a crowd or indulging in personal reflection. Agree or not, this is the time when we anticipate or desire something new. For me, it boils down to one question: Where do these mixed feelings or emotions come from?

Today, we posted on Instagram about the power of your surroundings, emphasizing how your environment impacts your feelings and, most importantly, reflects who you are. In the post, we listed four suggestions that delve into where you currently stand or what changes you can make to manifest the person you want to become.

1. Physical Environment:

We're talking about your room, your home, or even just your work desk. It's no secret that our brains need stimuli from the outside world to indicate our well-being. Look at your living environment. If it's messy and disorganized, and you secretly dislike it, organizing and cleaning up could be the first step. On the flip side, if you are the type who must keep everything spotless and exactly in its place, it's commendable for your discipline. However, be aware if someone can't meet your expectations, as it may affect your emotions. If so, there might be more to explore.

2. Social Circle:

In a perfect world, we want relationships—with friends, family, and our partners—that uplift, support, and encourage growth. Congratulations if you have that kind of relationship. In most situations, it's fair to say we choose to be somewhere and do things because we want to blend in and be part of something, which is healthy and normal. The question is, who is the leader, and who is the follower?

3. Digital Space:

The digital world is an extension of your surroundings. Consider what you are following on social media and what captures most of your attention, as this is what you feed your brain daily. Contents that are just enough to make you feel socially engaging but have no effect on connecting you with the people you know.

4. Cultural & Parental Influences:

Among all the factors mentioned, this is likely the trickiest. From the day we are born, we are bound to a culture and a set of worldviews from our parents or primary caregivers. It is subtle and almost unavoidable before we have the capacity to notice and form a unique set of worldviews. Therefore, it results in acting a certain way because it is a must to do so.

Nonetheless, the first step in initiating change is always to recognize where you currently stand and then establish a clear vision of where you want to be. Pay attention to your surroundings, and you will observe fragments of yourself manifesting in the environments you choose or somehow find yourself in.

As we approach the new year of 2024, let's embrace it and pursue the goals we aim for, whether they are personal, professional, or relational.
